Belated Halloween Pictures

Wow, it only took me 10 days to get Halloween pictures up! Thanks, Stacy! Now if only I could get the Disney World pictures online. You can click on any of these images to see the full picture.

Here's our second-place-winning yard. It is much more impressive in the dark, but the pics without the flash are blurry:

From left: Vicki as Princess Peach Toadstool, Stacy as Luigi, Zoe as Princess Daisy Toadstool, Scott as Mario, and Scarlett as Toad, the toadstool retainer.

From left: Casey as Dick Butkus, Kylie as a Bears Cheerleader, Traven as a Bears Linebacker, and Jamie as, well, I'm not sure what she's dressed as. Hmmm, that's a toughie.

From left: Vince as a Blue Man

And to finish off:
Scarlett as the Frosting Fiend!

Shakes Fist in Impotent Rage

Dammit.

We didn’t win 1st place in the Halloween decorating contest. I’m a little miffed since we spent quite a bit of time, effort, and money decking out our lawn. We had two giant inflatables: an 8’ purple spider complete with lights and a 5’+ tall globe featuring a lunatic with a knife and a cloud of swirling bats. That’s just the beginning! We had:

  • green webbing spanning the front wall lit with a black light
  • a cackling, light-up skeleton hanging from the tree
  • a black cat staring at the hanging skeleton
  • a skeleton breaking out of the ground with a light-up skull
  • webbing stretching from the tree to the lamppost and all over the front bushes
  • black lights in the lamppost and the front porch light
  • headstones with witty sayings

and the piece de resistance,

  • a machine that spewed fog from underneath the purple spider.

Oh, and numerous small pumpkins gutted by local squirrels, which were almost better than carved jack-o-lanterns. While the effect was cool, it was even funnier to watch Stacy driven to even higher throes of squirrelcide fantasies as she chased them away daily.

I’ll post a link to the HOA Web site once they have the pics of the contenders up. We took 2nd place to our house-decorating nemesis from down the street. They have a nice yard to begin with, but this year they used ghosts, a misting birdbath, a portable flaming brazier, and no less than 13 carved jack-o-lanterns. Apparently, the jack-o-lanterns put them over the top. If that’s what it takes, I’ll be carving pumpkins like mad next year, dammit.

Does anyone have the number to some good pumpkin smashers? Oooh, maybe I can transplant some of our pumpkin-hungry squirrels into their yard.

Fade out to sound of maniacal laughter.

Other Drivers = Jerkwads

For the purpose of this post, you may substitute any instance of the word “driver” with “jerkwad” or your expletive of choice.

I don’t know what contributes to my aggressive driving. Is it what I learned from my dad’s driving growing up? I still remember the time he was going to “turn over a new leaf” after receiving a ticket. That lasted all of a week. Is it just an extension of my impatient nature? I don’t appear to have a short temper. Most of the time I just get quiet when I’m mad, so it’s not obvious unless you’re paying attention. Is it my six years of driving in Virginia? If a light changes to green and the driver in front of you doesn’t move within one to two seconds, it is a common courtesy to lay on your horn until they driver goes. I suppose it doesn’t really matter where it comes from, the end result is that I hate all other cars on the road.

Don’t get me wrong, I think that every driver has the right to be on the road just as much as me. It’s just that they should not exercise that right when I’m driving. That’s right, if I’m on the road, all the other drivers should be off. If only I was that important.

It’s that attitude that causes me to daydream about creative ways to reduce frustration on the road. A few years ago I saw a comedian that wondered what it would be like if everyone’s license plate was also their cell phone number. I can think of a few choice words I’d have to say to the drivers that fail to notice me as they merge blithely into my lane.

Remember that old school game where you’d whisper something into a neighbor’s ear and tell them to “pass it on?” The physical variant involved punching your neighbor’s shoulder as hard as you could before telling them to share the wealth. Ah, youth.

I was stuck behind an annoyingly slow line of cars on the way home from shopping with Stacy last night. We knew traffic would be bad with the rain and rush hour, so we postponed it for a bit by spending some time at the mall. Apparently, we didn’t postpone long enough. As I was driving 10 miles under the speed limit in the left lane, I could see the driver in front of the pack just poking along. I thought back to that comedian and the old school game. How great would it be to call your fellow frustrated motorist in front of you and give him or her a sweet, polite, expletive-filled message to pass on? I imagine it would get pretty creative by the time it reached the driver at the front of the pack.

Who are these people that don’t follow the speed limits, anyway? What are their motives? What reason could someone have to slow down miles of traffic by going well under the speed limit in the fast lane? Are they completely unaware of the frustration they cause in other people? Is it a good thing I don’t have a gun in my car? I can only answer one of those questions, but the answer depends on how you’re driving when you’re on the road with me.

Completely Unrelated Dept.

I just had to share that to make a point. “10 Year Erection” would make a great name for a band.

Soccer Sucks

WHOOOOOAAAAAA!

That was the sound that literally made me jump minutes ago. Some guy in shorts kicked a ball into a net. Yay. Sports fans will forever mystify me. From where does your obsession with men and balls come? I’m not even making a gay joke here, I really don’t understand. What does that GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL signify in the scheme of things? So the team that you root for, composed of people that just happen to live in the same country, just happens to kick a ball into a net. So what? What did that gain you? What did that gain anyone? Please don’t try to dress any reply up in patriotism. Sports have nothing to do with patriotism. Athletic people are born everywhere. Their existence in a particular country’s team is part of the genetic lottery. It has nothing to do with the country or its ideals. I am fuming just sitting here listening to the sports nerds spouting off behind me. Pointless dialog is to be expected in the NOC, but the level of volume and passion is inexplicable. I have never received a satisfactory explanation behind any sport fan’s obsession. You might as well be in an Apple Jacks commercial. “I just like ‘em because I do.” Fine, like them, just keep it down, dammit. Some people are trying to read comics here.

The Buyer's Remorse and Chocolate Fondue Fountains are of the Dev-il

Originally posted March 16, 2006

Taxes suck, but tax refunds are friggin' awesome. Stacy and Nicole finished our taxes on Wednesday, revealing that we would get more than enough money back to fund the trip to Disney World we'll be taking in October. This in turn freed up my bonus from last year which was pending approval from the Mistress of Finance to be blown on the purchase of a hefty laptop. Said laptop:

Ah well. Once I receive the laptop (4-5 days after the proposed ship date of 4/4/2006) I will probably forget all about the vast amount of money I spent on it. That is, until Stacy reminds me again. That's alright though, I'll seek solace in the cold glow of my 17 inch UltraSharpTM Wide Screen UXGA Display with TrueLifeTM display. Ye be a harsh mistress, hardware upgrade.

In retrospect, I wish I had taken pictures of our continuing struggle against the evil chocolate fondue fountain. There were a couple industrial strength fondue fountains at our last company party. I could hardly tear my nine-month-pregnant Stacy away from them. When we found a smaller version at the local Wally's World, we snagged it thinking of the endless nights of cascading chocolate over delectable dippables. Chocolatefalls of tasty goodness drizzling over sumptuous treats. We bought a big bag of chocolate chips (Works with any type of chocolate! the garishly bright package boasts) and a few things to dip.

Can you hear it cackling with its metalic, evil laugh?

  • Day One:

    1. First try: Scott ineptly burns the chocolate in the microwave, filling the kitchen with a faintly pleasing yet contradictingly offensive odor and proving that he should not be allowed in the kitchen alone.
    2. Second try: Stacy melts the chocolate successfully in the microwave with the cup of vegetable oil (UGH!) that the instructions suggest. Scott contemplates the deviousness of the fountain, inserting such an unappetizing ingredient in the actual instructions. Mixture is too thick for the auger, rendering the small motor in the base useless as it buzzes impotently until turned off. Scott adds more oil to thin the mixture. The oil causes an unforseen chemical reaction, creating instant chocolate paste. Stacy adds increasing amounts of milk to thin the chocolate. Milk cools and thins the chocolate so much that it runs down the teirs with no sheeting and will not adhere to any of the dipping items. We succeeded in making chocolate milk. We have experienced defeat on the first day.

  • Day Two:

    1. Third try: Scott buys 10 bars of Cadbury Milk Chocolate, operating on the principle that the higher cocoa butter content translates into less added vegetable oil. Scott and Nicole melt chocolate in double boiler. Chocolate still too thick. Nicole adds butter, operating on the principle that it tastes better than vegetable oil. Chocolate seems to thicken(!) more. Scott adds milk, same unforseen chemical reaction as with the added oil in the second attempt. Chocolate congeals into something resembling what my dog does a few hours after he gets into the trash. Nicole proclaims it fudge. Disposed into double-bagged grocery sack (will not record what Nicole did with said bag.)
    2. Fourth try: Scott melts remaining Cadbury bars with no additions. Chocolate still too thick for the auger. Stacy heats some milk to prevent the previous congealing. Unsuccessful, chocolate congeals instantly on contact with heated milk.
    3. Fifth try: Scott places remaining heated milk over double boiler and melts chocolate chips slowly until mixture seems thin enough. Mixture is amazingly smooth. Chocolate is still too thick for auger. Stacy pours vegetable oil into mix (ugh!) Appears moderately successful, chocolate moves up through auger, but still will not sheet over teirs. Nicole adds more oil. Still no sheeting. Chocolate tastes and smells of vegetable oil (ugh!) Attempt devolves into rejected science project after Nicole dumps half a large bottle of vegetable oil into mix. Vegetable oil drips off of chocolate dangling from teirs and seperates in the base. Appetite ruined, day two goes to the fountain.

  • Day Three

    1. Sixth try: Stacy purchases more Cadbury chocolate. Scott melts one bar with 3/4 cups of shortening, operating on the same principle as the added butter in the third try. Scott and Stacy slowly add more chocolate bars until viscosity is just right. Seeming success! Chocolate runs up auger and drips down teirs. After a few minutes, top teir begins to sheet, bottom teir continues to drip. Scott and Stacy commence dipping. Chocolate tastes faintly of shortening. After a few more minutes, bottom teir sheets intermittently. Mixture seems to need further thickening. Scott melts another Cadbury bar and adds it slowly after cooled to the same temperature. Continue to dip, ignoring shortening flavor. Bottom does not fully sheet. Scott goes to double boiler to melt another bar. Meanwhile, Stacy reports that mixture is thickening on its own. Scott completes melting, returns to fountain to find the chocolate cooled and thickened so much that the auger had stopped. Fountain retreats, day is declared a draw.

Don't believe the pictures, chocolate does not do that.

We have saved the remaining chocolate for another day. I think with a little more thinning agent it will work continuously. The onboard heater is supposed to allow the chocolate to continue to flow after being added to the fountain. We are ordering some cocoa butter online for authentic chocolate flavored thinning. We will emerge victorious in the end!

[small, evil, metallic voice] You will never experience this chocolaty nirvana!
